Project: Recicla Portugal – UX Prototype for Recycling

Developed as part of the UX microcredential at the University of Aveiro, this project aimed to support and motivate proper household waste separation. It was inspired by international best practices and informed by local survey data. The app prototype was co-designed with users and included features such as ecopoint geolocation, educational content, and a symbolic reward system.

The user experience was tested through four usage scenarios covering everyday tasks like identifying recyclable materials, reporting ecopoint issues, and earning discounts through good recycling habits. Methods such as Emocards and the MAX protocol were used to assess emotional response and usability. Results showed strong engagement with the educational content and a clear need to simplify the reward system. The project demonstrated how design-led approaches can encourage sustainable behaviour change and improve digital tools for environmental action.
